Going to Thailand? Do You Actually Need the Yellow Fever Jab?
Short answer: it depends where you're flying from — not just where you're going.
Thailand itself has no yellow fever risk. So if you're flying direct from the UK, you generally don't need it for Thailand alone.
So why does everyone ask about it?
Because Thailand (like many countries) requires proof of yellow fever vaccination if you've recently been in — or transited through — a country where yellow fever is present. Think parts of Africa and South America (e.g. Kenya, Nigeria, Brazil, Colombia, Ethiopia, Uganda, Ghana, and others on Thailand's official list).
It's about your travel history, not your destination.
When you DO need it for Thailand
You've been in a yellow-fever-risk country in the 10 days+ before arriving in Thailand
You're transiting through one, even briefly, on the way
Airlines and immigration can ask for your certificate — no certificate, and you could be held at arrivals or refused entry
When you DON'T
Flying straight from the UK with no African/South American leg
No yellow-fever-risk country on your recent itinerary
Rule of thumb: check your whole route, not just your final stop.
Getting it sorted
The certificate only becomes valid 10 days after vaccination, and it's a one-off jab for life in most cases — so it's worth having if there's any chance you'll be doing Africa/South America and Thailand combo trips down the line.
Not every GP or pharmacy can give it — it has to be a registered Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre.
